The Atlanta Falcons are in big trouble

At the beginning of training camp, one of the Falcons’ first round picks (Jalon Walker) from 2025 tore his ACL and was subsequently placed on season ending IR. Just today, the other first round selection (James Pearce) was suspended for the first 8 games of the 2026 season. The team was already struggling with producing sacks and pressures with both rookies, and now they are missing their best players for the majority of 2026.

Why Was Pearce Suspended?

Pearce was suspended 8 games stemming from an arrest and accusations of domestic violence in February. The viral incident was bad press for the team and Pearce, who is now deemed guilty of violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. He was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police and resisting an officer with violence, as well as a misdemeanor account of stalking his ex-girlfriend.

Pearce, deemed one of the better prospects from the 2025 draft class, slipped due to rumours of his attitude being uncoachable. He had also been arrested for speeding in 2023 while playing for the Tennessee Volunteers.

Jalon Walker’s Injury

Unfortunately for Atlanta, they also lost Jalon Walker, who was showing elite potential as a rookie. He tore the ACL in his left knee on August 4th and was placed on season ending injured reserve. The league was anticipating a suspension of around 8 games for Pearce’s offseason actions, so the injury to Walker was an absolute blow to the team.

Who Will Start Now?

The Falcons acquired some talented veteran edge rushers to be in the rotation for 2026. They will now be thrust into starting roles, at least for the first 8 games of 2026. Azeez Ojulari and Samson Ebukam signed 1 year deals with Atlanta during the open free agency period. Ojulari has 22 career sacks across 5 professional season, but logged just 3 appearances in 2025.

Ebukam was once a powerful force on a dominant Rams defense, but has since bounced around as a rotational edge rusher. He spent last year with the Indianapolis Colts. The Atlanta Falcons selected versatile defensive player Harold Perkins in the 6th round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He played a lot of edge rusher during his time at LSU, but is extremely undersized for the position.

James Pearce Outlook

A suspension of this degree is never a good sign. Outside of his personal life being troubled, his reputation across the league is obviously not great. He isn’t anywhere near a contract extension, but when the time comes to be paid, this suspension will be placed into the minds of any team that wants him. It isn’t the end of the world, but an 8 game suspension isn’t ideal for any NFL player.

He will be able to participate in preseason games and all preseason activities. Once the season kicks in, he will be unpaid and unable to be with the team for the first 8 games of the season. They play the Steelers, Panthers, Packers, Saints, Ravens, Bears, 49ers and Buccaneers for the first 8 outings in 2026.

The Atlanta Falcons weren’t going to be world beaters in 2026, but unfortunately the combination of injuries, suspensions, and quarterback controversy has put them in the bottom tier of the league (at least in my eyes).
