No Short of Shenanigans in the NFL Offseason
The NFL is no stranger to drama.
The NFL is no stranger to drama.
This offseason has been electric, between trades being rescinded and the reigning defensive player of the year being moved to the Super Bowl favourites. What has unfortunately plagued the last few months is nothing short of shenanigans - arrests, court dates and social media outbursts.
The earliest sign of this was Stefon Diggs getting released by the New England Patriots due to cap concerns, but primarily accusations of strangulation and various forms of assault by a personal chef. He was later found not guilty, but accusations can tarnish names, especially those with longer lists of said accusations.
What about his coach in New England? Well, anyone with social media has definitely seen what went down between Mike Vrabel and reporter Diana Russini. Nothing screams drama like a viral cheating scandal. Vrabel decided to step away from the team during the latter half of the NFL Draft due to the leaks of him and Russini’s infidelity to their spouses.
Cheating and unfounded accusations aren’t even the worst thing to hit the league in 2026. Rashee Rice, the best receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, spent 30 days in jail. That’s right. He didn’t receive a lick of time for his reckless driving that wound up killing a man in 2024, but was charged with a probation violation and booked in Dallas County Jail in the middle of May. During his release, paparazzi decided to storm the front of the county jail to get their pictures and videos in. Rice decided to run away, and was subsequently recorded speeding through a pedestrian crosswalk. Thankfully, nobody was hurt this time.
College football has been plagued by issues for years. Corruption, politics and fear tactics have been a thing since the foundation of the NCAA. Players have been suspended for receiving 30 dollars in gifts from family members, while others have played whole seasons after being found guilty of misdemeanors. Very recently, Texas Tech transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby checked himself into a 35 day gambling rehab facility. The NCAA launched an investigation into his behaviour and came away with evidence he placed bets on active games of which he participated in. This stripped him of his future college eligibility, but only momentarily. He was then reinstated and only suspended for 2 games, but the outcry was far too much for the Texas Tech admins to handle and he was then let go by the university. After applying for special eligibility with the NFL, he was denied entry to the Supplemental Draft, and thus will not play football in 2026. Sorsby struggled with gambling habits, and was severely punished due to the rules that have been quickly imposed across North America.
Another tally on the board, former Detroit Lions 1st round draft pick Terrion Arnold was recently arrested in connection to kidnapping and assault plots. This stemmed from a report that an Air BNB under his name had been robbed of up to 250,000$ in valuables. When the police found nothing of substance, Arnold allegedly decided to take matters into his own hands. He and his friends put together a honey trap, where a woman lured the men they thought were responsible for a robbery into a place where Arnold’s peers can beat and rob them. This was grossly overestimated, and Arnold didn’t even attack the people responsible for the aforementioned BNB robbery. Arnold was arrested, and posted a 1 million dollar bond. The Detroit Lions waived him, and he is now an unrestricted free agent. Funnily enough, Arnold may have a chance to play football in 2026, as his attorneys filed a motion to not have him wear an ankle monitor, as 3 teams allegedly have interest in signing the former Alabama cornerback.
What about a player getting CTE from an ACL tear? All jokes aside, 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been on tirade through his social media pages. He initially decided to not show up to the 49ers mandatory rehab early in 2025 after tearing his ACL. After being outed by coaches to the media, Aiyuk posted himself driving over the speed limit as he passed the team stadium. This video was later used as evidence for an arrest warrant. Recently, Aiyuk has been posting hilarious rants and videos saying he will play for the Washington Commanders in 2026. Unfortunately, it looks like he is making things worse for himself and he will not be touching the field this year.
If all of this can go down in a single offseason, I fear there may be way more situations to unfold during the regular season. Some of these were silly, others not so much. This goes to show that your favourite player may be toxic and not a favourite in their very own locker room.
