The Brandon Aiyuk Situation
Brandon Aiyuk’s career may be over.
Just 2 seasons ago Aiyuk was on top of the world. One of the best receivers in the league and a fresh contract extension to go with his best season as a pro. After an ACL tear in week 7 of the 2024 season, nothing has been the same. He refused to go along with the 49ers plan of rehab and then stopped showing up to the facility altogether after the 2024 season ended. More recently, he went on a social media tirade, bashing his former team and making claims that he will be playing for the Washington Commanders in 2026. His friendship with quarterback Jayden Daniels was a catalyst for this rumour and subsequent social media campaign to be traded to the team, but there was some turmoil between the two after Aiyuk accused him and his mother (certified NFL agent) of being scared and targeted Daniels specifically by saying he runs behind his mom. Though he continued claiming to be a future member of the team, he ruined his relationship with his only true connection to the Commanders by outing Jayden Daniels publicly. His antics have been costly… especially with the news that dropped a few days ago
The Washington Commanders just signed former Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs to a 1 year deal. At the age of 28, Aiyuk’s short career may have come to an end. And he caused a lot of the issues that are going to directly keep him away from the sport of football.
Is there any chance that he will bounce back?
Brandon Aiyuk’s talent has always been there. Between his explosive catches at Arizona State to his selection in the 1st round of the NFL draft, he was a star in all the ways you want for a receiver. I don’t see a future where there are teams looking to trade for Aiyuk, nor will anyone want to pay him a big contract. He is still currently on the 49ers roster, but his antics have cost him the guaranteed money remaining on his deal. He would have to be released from the 49ers and subsequently sign with a team if he ever wants to play football again.
The Nail in the Coffin
Was there any one event that ended Aiyuk’s career? Can it be attributed to the ACL tear, or was the signing of Washington Commanders gear the real turnoff?
I believe that off the field antics matter only to a certain degree. As we see in Washington, they signed Diggs who is coming off a court case with pretty terrible allegations, as well as his antics in the Bills locker room during his tenure with the team. But openly bashing and dragging members of your current (yes, Aiyuk is still technically a 49er) team through the mud is usually a no-go for the entire league.
Teams still have an image they must hold up, and sometimes a someone with ongoing court cases or even a convicted felon is a better look than an unstable player rambling on social media.
The Dark Side
It may be funny to see, but what is going on with Brandon Aiyuk is nothing to laugh at. There is clearly a mental struggle he is battling. It may be a case of CTE, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is the degradation of the brain due to repeated brain trauma. The struggle of going from star to recovery from injury may have also affected his mental health. We’ve seen cases recently such as Rondale Moore, who struggled with injury and it took a hit on his mental health.
Instead of seeking out help, it seems he is isolating himself and burning bridges that have been there for him in the past. Aiyuk even called Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch “weirdos” for contacting his family and showing up at his house.
If there is any legacy left for Aiyuk, it may just be the fact he is a stern reminder to take care of yourself and the people in your life. He will probably never play a snap of professional football again.
