The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in trouble - star defensive tackle Vita Vea has officially requested a trade. This comes after contract extension negotiations broke down and halted this offseason. He is one of the premiere nose guards in the entire league. Vea is entering the final year of his extension off his rookie deal. He also isn’t the only one with a contract that needs extending…

Why Hasn’t He Been Paid?

In situations like this, the question of why the team doesn’t smack down a bag instantly always looms. In this scenario, the Buccaneers may be playing it safe with Vita Vea because Baker Mayfield, their starting quarterback, needs to get paid as well. The team currently stands to have around 25 million dollars in cap space for 2027, which isn’t so bad. Unfortunately, that 25 million would shrink instantly with extensions to both players. Mayfield is coming off the back of his 3 year extension with the Buccaneers, and had an elite season in 2024, tossing an electric 41 touchdowns. He is a top end quarterback with a lot of tools to be happy with.

Who Is More Important?

Teams will usually value the skill positions and edge rushers when it comes to allocating draft picks and money. On paper, the quarterback should be more than triple as valuable than a defensive tackle. Vea is likely seeking a contract worth just over 20 million dollars per year, while Mayfield may be in store for upwards of 55 million per year. The longevity of quarterbacks is also more valuable than a nose tackle. It is not as cut and dry for the Buccaneers here, though, as Baker’s injury history and slight decline as the 2025 season went on may be indicative of what the future holds. Vea, on the other hand, is a powerful interior frontline player with an impressive number of sacks from his alignment.

Now it isn’t so surprising to see a player officially asking for a trade. Vea is making things official because it will make the Buccaneers act fast. The advantage is simple - stress the front office out. They will receive trade calls from other clubs with likely half of what Vea is worth due to him asking for a trade. And if they do not grant his request, he will play out the final year of his deal and then walk in free agency. To avoid all of this, Tampa Bay just has to pay the man.

Can They Keep Both?

The Buccaneers can very well be in a position to keep both Mayfield and Vea, but would they want to? Missing the playoffs isn’t a fun time, but the team is aging rapidly and still has many holes to fill. The division is only getting tougher, with the Panthers finding their groove late in 2025 and the Saints being a young team with plenty of raw talent. Both Vea and Mayfield are 31 years old. The team is very average, and doesn’t seem to be close to Super Bowl contention. Paying big money to both players would only delay a potential rebuild and also hinder their chances at signing talent in the free agency pool.

They let Mike Evans walk in free agency and are probably regretting the Chris Godwin extension from the offseason before. Trading Vita Vea would result in a huge hit defensively, but also give the team extra draft capital in case this season blows up in their face. The decision on Mayfield also doesn’t have to be rushed, because he can be franchise tagged or worst case be given a late extension.

As of now, it doesn’t look like either will be paid before the season starts in September. Vea has made things serious by requesting a trade. The Buccaneers are poised to make the next move ; And they need to be smart about it.
